Mary Ellen Lindsay
Representational fine art painting
Portland Oregon

My art, representational in nature, deals with the human condition. It addresses human emotion and our relationship with life situations. I make a personal journey on which I conjure up the incidents, people, pets and dreams that are, or have been, important to me.

My work is a social commentary, often highlighting the rituals of family and relationships, but also the isolation that is often present. It is uncomfortable to see ourselves as others see us, unmasked and unprotected. When we deal with our insecurities and vulnerabilities, we leave ourselves to the mercy of others and sometimes will reveal more of our true selves. If I’m addressing the human condition, then I must address our foibles. That is why I try to include humor into my paintings, because we need to laugh at ourselves, no matter how painful.

It is through this revelatory process that we become enlightened. I work on various surfaces. They are all an evolution, whether starting with a monotype on paper or painting directly on board. When I start with a monotype, I go back and paint directly on the paper and will sometimes add collage to the equation. I deal with surface, process, color and composition.

I like the history of the painting to show through. Color and process are very important. I like to use color imaginatively, wherever it will benefit the painting, to see life differently than we might otherwise. It is through the process of applying paint and collage that the intent of the painting is revealed to me. This process represents to me the layering of life coming through on the final surface of the painting.

Life is a process and so are my paintings.
